In Colombia, MADRE and partners work together to combat the root causes and impacts of gender-based violence against Indigenous and Afro-descendant girls. MADRE and our local partners operate in the regions of Colombia in which Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and refugee girls and their families face high rates of sexual violence, mental illness, teen pregnancy, food insecurity, water scarcity, poverty, and the presence of illegal armed groups. The forced recruitment of girls into armed groups is a persistent and growing issue, posing a lethal threat to girls in Colombia and contributing to the erosion of human rights for women and girls throughout the country.
Over the last year, MADRE resourced our partners to provide over 140 girls with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-an empirically-based psychotherapy that utilizes mindfulness strategies to improve psychological resilience-and use digital media for self-expression. Girls are guided in identifying the challenges they face and the emotions that surround them and receive resources to express these publicly through small films and personal narratives. Throughout the process, the girls were guided in developing a greater understanding of their bodies, the social contexts that they live in, and the resources available to them. In doing so, these girls gained tools to raise awareness around the gender violence issues that affect them and mobilize their communities for change by sharing their stories.
Your donations support this essential work. Thank you for standing with Afro-descendant and Indigenous young women and girls in Colombia!
