Peace is growing nearer in Colombia. After more than 50 years of war, the Colombian government and the FARC, an armed rebel group, are closer than ever to signing an agreement to end the violence and suffering that have plagued women, children and communities for years.
But a vital question remains: How can we ensure that a signed piece of paper translates into real and lasting peace on the ground? Stella Duque from our Colombian partner group Taller de Vida and I answer this question in an op-ed published this week in The Guardian.
I hope you’ll read it and let me know what you think.
With thanks,

Women Are on the Frontline of Making Peace in Colombia Last
Church bells rang out, echoing across Colombia. People held signs in the streets and posted exuberant messages online: the last day of the war.
That day last month, when the ceasefire was signed, could have been the last day of the war, but a piece of paper is no guarantee. Realizing the ceasefire’s promise – lasting peace – lies not in the final agreement but in grassroots activism.
Big questions need answers. How will we ensure that demobilization and weapons handovers happen without violence? How will we provide care and counseling to people who bear the physical and emotional scars of the war, including an estimated 13,600 survivors of sexual violence? How will we reintegrate combatants, especially thousands of soldiers forcibly conscripted as children, into communities still wary of them?
Grassroots female peace activists have not only anticipated these questions. While war raged, they seeded their answers into embattled communities and into the peace process.
