MORE TREES - THE CHALLENGE

Dear Donors,

In recent months, we have been working on the restoration of degraded land and the eradication of poverty. The project is designed to benefit more than 4,000 families and to restore approximately 1,900 hectares of degraded soil each year, over a period of about seven consecutive years.

The geographic scope of implementation covers 35 rural communities located in the districts of Huanoquite, Omacha, Accha, Ccapi, and Ccapacmarca, in the Cusco region of Peru.

We are currently in the third year of implementation. We have recently completed our second forestry campaign (2024), successfully planting approximately 2,000 hectares. There is still a long road ahead, with much to learn alongside the participating communities and local governments.

We are currently in the third year of implementation, having successfully completed two forestry campaigns.

We continue to affirm that the future of the planet is in the hands of family farmers.

Our main Target of the MORE TREES project is to restore 13,300 hectares and establish 1,330 hectares in conservation.

Active community participation is essential to achieving the project's objectives, as their knowledge of the territory, commitment, and ownership of the processes ensure the sustainability and long-term impact of the actions implemented.

This project offers environmental, economic and social benefits in rural communities.

The analysis of the degraded ecosystem requires a lot of research and action. The assessment strategy we have implemented comprises the following steps:

Mapping and identification of the degraded area in the communities.
Diagnosis and selection of the Pachamama Raymi Methodology.
Identification of the reference ecosystem
Consultation with local actors

Restoring eroded soils is not only possible, but essential. Although it is more challenging than intervening in earlier stages, the social, environmental, and economic benefits of rehabilitating degraded land make it a smart and necessary investment. In recent months we have worked on the restoration of degraded lands and eradication of poverty

The design is aimed at more than 4000 families and 1900 hectares annually for approximately 7 continuous years. The provinces selected for their location are Paruro with 4 districts, Huanoquite, Omacha, Accha and Ccapi. And the province of Chumbivilcas in the district of Ccapacmarca.

We continue to affirm that the future of the planet is in the hands of family farmers.

Our main Target of the MORE TREES project is to restore 13,300 hectares and establish 1,330 hectares in conservation.

This project offers environmental, economic and social benefits in rural communities.

The project is aligned with ten of the sustainable development objectives

Achieve the prosperity of peasant families and the recovery of natural resources, through the establishment of forest plantations, which generate goods and ecosystem services in favor of peasant families and communities.

The project began in February 2023, we have managed to recover 1,365 hestareas in the first Forestry campaign, we are currently in our second Campaign (2024 - 2025), with a lot of effort together with the protagonists of the project, which are the peasant communities, the local government and Pachamama Raymi have exceeded our expectations by managing to plant more than 2,200 hectares and we have managed to establish 627 hectares of conservation.

Our next steps:

- Finalize our 2024 forestry campaign.

- Certify planting areas.

- Generate economic income for communities in poverty and extreme poverty through the sale of carbon credits

Our trees are growing towards December 2024

Dear Donors

We are very grateful for your support in this project.

These months we have been working hard on 3 big goals.

1-Take care of and measure the plantations and our nurseries.

2- Conduct biodiversity and socio-environmental impact studies for the project.

3- Prepare the Project Idea Note (PIN) for the Plan Vivo standard.

Taking care of our plantations has been fascinating, measuring their growth and their change in colour. The pine tree is so noble that it grows in highly degraded conditions with very little water and high solar radiation. Of the 2023 plantation of 1,400 hectares, a fraction of the plantation has been affected by forest fires. We must replace this loss in the next planting campaign 2024-2025.

Likewise, caring for and protecting our nurseries is a task of dedication and care. The technique of producing bare-root seedlings is full of details that make the difference in having strong and robust trees that survive in the field. We are waiting for this rainy season to start our 2024-2025 planting campaign in December.

The Biodiversity and Socio-Environmental Impact Study has allowed leading researchers to get to know the rural communities that own the project first-hand. They have talked with them, walked alongside them over long stretches of land, observing, listening to and measuring everything around them.

Finally, with the feedback from these biodiversity and environmental impact field studies and the entire project profile, the Project Idea Note (PIN) was prepared for the Plan Vivo standard, which is in its second revision.

It is new for the entire research community to consider a carbon credit project in the Peruvian Sierra. We are being very careful in our approach and validating the potential and impact of the project for rural communities to prosper.

In our next report we hope that we will already have the rains and our 2024-2025 planting campaign will begin.
