Training For Building Stronger Roots
Training For Building Stronger Roots

Namaste, Greetings from Nepal!

As Nepal marked its first anniversary of the disastrous earthquake on April 25, 2016; IsraAID has moved forward with long term activities in various sectors for the better reconstruction and rehabilitation of Nepalese community. With a continuation of the programs from the first quarter of 2016 such as Livelihood and Women Empowerment and Educational Support Program; IsraAID has started the second quarter of the year with long-term programs in Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) along with the expansion of Community theatre program.

IsraAID has evolved as the pioneer organization in Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) sector in Nepal since the earthquake last year. IsraAID has been running various consortiums on the MHPSS sector; bringing all the MHPSS actors to one place and spearheading various activities. IsraAID’s largest MHPSS project, enriching Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHV’s) from six earthquake affected districts with the psychosocial component is in full swing and has trained 568 FCHV’s so far.

IsraAID provided a Capacitor training, a trauma healing tool, for 50 caregivers of several old age homes around Kathmandu. The main objective of this training was to bring the energy level and positive movement back among the elders traumatized by the earthquake.

In addition, IsraAID developed and started another eight months long MHPSS project, “Building Stronger Roots”. The main objective of this eight-month long project is to enhance the PSS skills on eight thematic areas of Family Counselling for professionals and organization working in Nepal.

Under this program, twenty MHPSS professionals working in Nepal will be provided with a dedicated training on family counselling; one workshop each month will be conducted by an international expert on one of the thematic topics. The professionals will be provided with a graduation certificate at the end of eight months. IsraAID has selected twenty MHPSS professionals from more than fifty applicants for the first ever training of its kind in Nepal. The first workshop on Loss, Grief and Mourning was held for the selected candidates.

IsraAID’s most popular Community Theatre Program, continues to reach the earthquake affected community with messages spreading awareness on psychosocial issues. IsraAID launched its unique social intervention on “Home Owner Awareness Program on Safer Building Construction through Theatre” through community theatre in Sindhupalchok district. The main objective of this program is to raise awareness among rural communities on key messages of safer building construction. More than 20,000 house owner and masons have been reached and benefitted from key messages on safer building construction.

IsraAID’s Women Empowerment and Livelihood program, HoneyAid enters into the second phase as the honey hits the Nepali market for the first time. The cash incentive from the first sale was distributed among the women for further motivation and encouragement. Furthermore, an additional sixty bee hives were distributed in June, among the beneficiary women of the project. The Women of HoneyAID received their first aid training by our volunteer from Israel. The second phase of HoneyAid started in another village of Kavre Districts, where 60 more women will join the HoneyAid family.

IsraAID continues its Educational Support Program from first quarter; providing girls from earthquake affected community with scholarships and counselling support. With the aim of capacity building of local volunteers and underprivileged youth, a week-long theatre workshop was conducted. Out of the participants from the various group, thirty youth volunteers interested in making a career in theatre have been selected and an exclusive theatre workshop once a week is being conducted to empower them.

The last woman safely rescued by IsraAID's search and rescue team on the fifth day of the earthquake, had been supported through her follow up medical treatment. Besides this, her children have received full scholarships by IsraAID.

We are grateful to all the supporters, well-wishers and contributors for the continuous support and belief shown to IsraAID. Your support has ensured that we achieve our objective of building back a better Nepal through our programs and activities. We are hopeful to receive your support in future for the betterment of earthquake affected communities of Nepal.
