Susan is a bright and determined young girl from Impiro village in Kajiado County, Kenya. This is a region affected by prolonged droughts, high poverty levels, and deeply rooted cultural practices that often limit girls’ access to education. She is the seventh of eight siblings in a polygamous family, where most of her sisters were married off at a young age and never had the opportunity to attend school. Susan’s parents are uneducated and financially constrained, especially after losing their livestock to the 2019 drought. This was their primary source of livelihood.
Her family now lives in a single manyatta (traditional hut) and depends on her older brothers, who work as security guards in Nairobi. Affecto Foundation enrolled Susan into the Watoto Wasome program in February 2024. This not only gives her a chance to work for a brighter future but also protects her from harmful cultural practices such as FGM and childhood marriage. The scholarship and mentorship empower her to transform her life and uplift her community.
Due to the constant mentorship, Susan is now outspoken, passionate, and certain of what she wants in life. She is on the right trajectory to achieving her dreams of pursuing aviation. Thank you, GlobalGiving, for enabling Affecto to impact and reach students such as Susan. We are grateful for the continuous partnership.
