Wiring completed: solar is powering the radio!

Completing the wiring in the dairy
Completing the wiring in the dairy

Dear friends,

We’re pleased to share some exciting progress from Terat, where efforts to strengthen both the community dairy and ORS-FM Maasai Community Radio are continuing with real momentum.

The wiring for the dairy is now fully completed, which means the reliable solar power system is up and running. This marks an important milestone not only for the dairy itself - which is expected to begin operations soon, providing a new source of income for the local community - but also for the radio station. ORS-FM will now benefit from a dependable and sustainable power supply, supporting its continued broadcasts to the wider Maasai region.

As part of this work, new fibre optic internet cables were also used at the dairy, boosting internet connectivity across the OMASI compound. This is a big step forward, demonstrating the potential of fibre optic technology even in remote and low-cost settings. It's an exciting model for future community-based projects, and one we look forward to exploring.

ORS-FM continues to transmit successfully, sharing essential news, cultural programming, and educational content with its listeners. The station also plays a key technical role in the solar system by acting as an anchor load, consistently using about 30% of the energy generated and helping to keep the system running efficiently.

As ever, if you would like to share this project with your friends and family, please do so that we can continue to support the vital work of ORS-FM in supporting the Maasai community. We, and ORS-FM, will be very grateful for any support!

With warmest regards,

Kirsten and the SVRG Team
