Transforming a "Roadside Curse" into a Green Blessing: Save Naalumanikkaattu

Project Summary

Naalumanikkaattu (The "Evening Breeze") was once a toxic dumping yard transformed by a local community into India’s first village roadside ecotourism destination and a 5-star rated "Eat Right Street." However, a new wave of sanitary waste pollution threatens this green miracle. We are raising $120,000 (INR 1 Crore) to establish a state-of-the-art Waste Management Center, featuring an industrial biogas plant and a safe sanitary incinerator, to ensure this "Evening Breeze" remains pure for generations to come.

The Challenge: From Scenic Beauty to a "Dumping Yard"

In 2011, the scenic Manarcad-Ettumanoor Bypass in Kottayam, Kerala, was under attack. What should have been a picturesque drive through emerald paddy fields had become a nightmare. Following the road’s construction, the deserted stretches became a magnet for illegal waste dumping. Trucks from the city arrived under the cover of darkness to offload mountains of trash. The air stank, the soil was poisoned, and the "Evening Breeze" was lost to the stench of decay.

The Transformation: A Community Fights Back

The local residents refused to let their home perish. Under the technical guidance of TIES (Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences) and the leadership of the Manarcad-Ettumanoor Bypass Residents Association, a revolution began.

The community physically cleared the waste, planted fruit trees, and built benches. What was once a "curse" became Naalumanikkaattu—India’s first village-led roadside ecotourism project. Today, it is a bustling destination where families gather to breathe fresh air. Recently, it earned the prestigious FSSAI 5-Star Rating, becoming India’s first "Eat Right Street Food Hub."

The Crisis: The Invisible Threat

Despite these accolades, the battle isn't over. While the daytime brings tourists, the nighttime brings "waste-throwers." Recently, the area has seen a surge in discarded napkins, diapers, and sanitary pads—waste that cannot be composted and poses a severe health risk to the ecosystem. Police fines haven't stopped the littering. The very beauty we fought to reclaim is once again at risk of being choked by non-biodegradable waste.

The Solution: A Circular Waste Economy

Our goal is to turn this crisis into a permanent solution by establishing a Demonstrable Waste Management Center on a newly identified plot of land.

Your donation will fund:

  1. Upgraded Biogas Plant: Expanding our capacity to convert all food waste from our street food hub into clean energy.
  2. Scientific Incinerator: Installing a high-standard, safe incinerator specifically to dispose of sanitary and non-recyclable waste hygienically.
  3. Public Announcement & Surveillance: A comprehensive PA system to educate visitors in real-time about hygiene and a monitoring system to deter illegal dumping.
  4. Awareness Campaigns: Training for vendors and visitors on "Zero-Waste" living and sanitary practices.

Long-Term Impact

By supporting this project, you are not just funding a waste plant; you are protecting a global model of community-led conservation.

  • Environmental Health: Protecting the paddy fields and water table from plastic and sanitary contamination.
  • Public Health: Ensuring the 5-star "Eat Right" hub remains a safe, hygienic space for thousands of monthly visitors.
  • Economic Empowerment: Maintaining the livelihoods of local vendors who depend on a clean, beautiful Naalumanikkaattu.

Help us prove that a community’s love for their land is stronger than any "curse" of waste. Donate today to keep the "Evening Breeze" clean!

Suggested Quick Facts for Sidebar/Donation Tiers:

  • $25: Provides educational materials for one "Zero-Waste" community workshop.
  • $100: Funds one month of maintenance for the public announcement and monitoring system.
  • $500: Contributes to the technical installation of the high-temperature sanitary incinerator.
  • $1,000: Helps expand the Biogas plant capacity to process an additional 100kg of waste daily.
