No More Trash Bags for 50,000 Kids in Foster Care

"To carry your stuff in a trash bag, it makes you feel like this is your fault, you're worth nothing, none of this stuff is worth anything to anyone else," Baker said. Just like Rob, she was also given a trash bag each time she moved. But things are slowly shifting. In the past two years, Maryland, Texas and Oregon have all banned the use of trash bags in foster care. Similar legislation was recently introduced in New York City.

As a former child of the foster care system myself, and now as the founder of an organization serving tens of thousands of youth in foster care, I am moved by your support. Ensuring that children and young adults receive Comfort Cases instead of trash bags is a big system change!

Each year, over 370,000 children move through foster care in the United States, often enduring instability, hardship, and an overwhelming sense of impermanence. The approximately 27,000 youth who rely on Social Security payments each month face even greater challenges due to the loss of a parent or serious disabilities. These children deserve a reliable foundation as they navigate foster care, particularly during transitional phases, like reunification, placement with new caregivers, or aging out of the system. Sadly, we know that for many, the journey after aging out is fraught with housing insecurity, early parenthood, and struggles with mental health and substance use.

The work Comfort Cases does to provide a sense of belonging and dignity to children entering the system has shown us time and again the profound impact of stability and consistent support. In addition, I serve as a steadfast advocate because I believe that by streamlining processes and reducing barriers, we can further support these vulnerable youth. Simplifying access to their benefits, extending personalized financial guidance, and coordinating with child welfare agencies could make a tremendous difference in their lives, especially for youth aging out of foster care. A focus on transitional support would address the risks of homelessness, mental health issues, and financial instability, which are all too common among these young adults.

I am always eager to contribute to any dialogue and typically participate in 80+ public speaking engagements per year. I share my insights into the day-to-day needs and struggles of youth in foster care (it hasn’t changed much since I was in the system 40+ years ago!). As a father of five children from the foster care system and someone who grew up in the DC foster care system, I have witnessed firsthand how targeted, consistent support can transform lives and empower children to pursue a brighter future. Hope and dignity go a long way, empowering young people to aspire for a good life and achieve the same things as their peers - good schooling, friends, neighbors, and family.
