Imprisoned for Her Courage: Restoring Dignity for Women Behind Bars in Sudan
Amna*, a 34-year-old teacher and mother of two, was imprisoned in El Gadrif for alleged "collaboration"—a vague accusation that echoes a growing and alarming trend in Sudan: the criminalization of women speaking out or simply surviving in conflict-affected regions. Amna is not alone. Since our last report, over 80 women like her have been held in detention facilities in Kassala and El Gedarif, spaces plagued by overcrowding, hunger, and neglect.
In these prisons, food is scarce. Medicine is a privilege. And something as basic as a sanitary pad is entirely out of reach. Through the Pads for Peace initiative, we are standing in solidarity with Sudanese women facing the harshest realities of conflict, displacement, and now, unjust imprisonment. Over the past month, thanks to your ongoing support, SIHA Network provided three-month supplies of sanitary pads and other hygiene items to 80 incarcerated women, restoring a small, vital piece of dignity in the most undignified of conditions.
Why This Matters
Prisons in Sudan are not built for women. They lack the most basic gender-sensitive infrastructure and supplies. For women who are menstruating, the absence of hygiene products leads to infections, shame, and psychological distress. What we're witnessing is beyond just a humanitarian gap; it's a human rights failure.
Your support helps us respond where few others do. Through this campaign, beyond supplying pads, we are:
But the need is growing. And we need your help to continue. Our goal is to continue to reach more displaced women & girls across Kassala, Gadarif, and White Nile before the end of 2025. To do that, we need to raise an additional $10,000 in the next 60 days.
Every dollar, every share, every post matters. Join us in this urgent act of care, solidarity, and resistance.
