Provide access to healthcare in rural Haiti

Dear Friends of Fondwa:

As I'm sure you are aware, the situation in Haiti continues to be challenging. Port-au-Prince and areas north are almost completely gang controled. According to the United Nations Populations Fund, "The humanitarian crisis in Haiti is growing increasingly dire, as gang violence in Port-au-Prince persists and is spilling out into the provinces. More than 1 million people have been displaced across the country, with the most vulnerable seeking refuge in locations that lack the most basic services."

In fact, many people have fled to the countryside, and we see this impact in Fondwa. Thankfully, the gang violence has not spread to the south. The APF Fondwa clinic continues to serve the people of Fondwa, and those who are fleeing to the south to escape the violence. 

From April to June 2025, the APF Fondwa Clinic received 209 visits in total:

88 patients for consultations at the Fondwa clinic

121 visits for child vaccinations, including 2 children who are now fully vaccinated

Breakdown by month:

April: 55 visits total – 24 consultations and 31 vaccinations

May: 80 visits total – 36 consultations and 44 vaccinations

June: 74 visits total – 28 consultations and 48 vaccinations

Most frequent illnesses encountered during this 3-month period (total cases) included emergencies, gastritis, gastroenteritis, genital and urinary infections, diabetes, pruritic dermatoses, severe phimosis, hypertension, Infant colic, respiratory infection, conjunctivitis, tinea capitis (scalp ringworm), anemia, tonsillitis, moderate acute malnutrition (MAM), arthrosis, psychotic disorder, and candida albicans infection. Total cases for the period, 209. 

During this period, we referred 1 patient with a pregnancy for specialized service and better management.

Dear Friends of Fondwa and APF:

Haiti continues to struggle under gang activity, but so far the expansion has been to the North and not towards Fondwa. In Fondwa, we are, of course, impacted by the disfunction and insecurity in the capital. But, for the most part we continue to put "one foot in front of the other" and our clinic remains open to serve the underserved. For this, we are very grateful ... especially for your partnership with us. There is very little healthcare available in Haiti, yet we persist. 

Here is the 1Q report of activity:

From January to March 2025, we received 283 patients, including vaccinations. All were treated at the clinic, and three - including a stroke victim - were referred to a hospital. The cases included accidental injuries, gastritis, diabetes, genital and urinary infections, hypertension, skin disorders, respiratory infections, asthma, anemia and acute malnutrition in children (7 cases ... more than usual). 

Vaccination continues to take place on the first, second, and third Thursday of each month. We also use the opportunity to raise awareness among parents on useful topics for themselves, their children, their families, and the environment.

This quarter, we discussed:

• How to prepare oral rehydration solution for diarrhea
• How to conduct breast self-examination for lumps
• How to treat and store drinking water, especially during the rainy season
