PROMOTE ACCESS TO JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN DRC

1. Background and Rationale

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in rural areas of South Kivu, access to justice remains a rare privilege. Poor and vulnerable populations face multiple barriers, including the distance to courts, high legal costs, lack of legal information, weak judicial institutions, and recurring human rights violations.
For many families, the law is seen as an essential tool for protection and change, yet it remains out of reach. This project responds to an urgent need: bringing justice closer to the people and restoring confidence in the rule of law.

2. Overall Objective

To promote and strengthen access to justice and human rights for poor and marginalized populations in South Kivu, enabling them to defend their rights, prevent abuses, and contribute to a more just and inclusive society.

3. Specific Objectives

Provide accessible legal services to indigent people in South Kivu.
Strengthen the institutional, policy, and legal framework that supports the rule of law, good governance, and human rights.
Build the capacity of justice sector stakeholders on fundamental human rights principles.
Train and deploy community paralegals capable of delivering grassroots legal assistance.

4. Target Groups

Poor and vulnerable rural populations (women, youth, detainees, and victims of rights violations).
Community actors and local leaders.
Paralegals and justice system stakeholders (police, prisons, and courts).

5. Key Planned Activities

Identification and training of trainers and learners (paralegals).
Primary legal assistance within communities, police stations, prisons, and courts.
Community awareness-raising on fundamental rights and legal remedies.
Advocacy for improvements in laws and policies related to access to justice.
Capacity building for local justice actors.

6. Expected Results

Increased access to justice for rural populations in South Kivu.
Progressive improvement of the legislative and institutional framework governing access to justice.
Establishment of a functional network of paralegals supporting the work of lawyers.
Citizens who are better informed, empowered, and able to claim their rights peacefully and lawfully.

7. Project Progress Status

The total project budget is estimated at USD 30,000.
To date, USD 63 has already been raised through collaboration with GlobalGiving. While modest, this initial support is a strong sign of trust and an encouraging starting point.
The project is currently in the phase of identifying trainers and learners, with implementation scheduled to begin in November 2025.

Justice and Human Rights Access in South Kivu

1. Background and Rationale

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly in the rural areas of South Kivu, access to justice remains a privilege enjoyed by only a few. Rural populations face extreme poverty, limited knowledge of the law, lack of proximity to judicial institutions, and frequent human rights abuses—leaving them defenseless against injustice.

This project, titled "Promote Access to Justice and Human Rights in DRC", is an urgent response to these realities. It aims to strengthen the rule of law, improve legal services for vulnerable communities, and build a society where every citizen—regardless of their background—can claim their rights and seek justice.

2. Project Objectives

Provide access to legal services for indigent populations in rural South Kivu.
Strengthen the institutional and legal framework through advocacy for inclusive public policies.
Train key justice sector stakeholders (paralegals, police officers, magistrates, etc.) on fundamental human rights.
Raise awareness among local communities so they can become agents of their own rights.

3. Expected Results

Increased access to justice for rural communities through decentralized legal services.
Improved legislative and institutional environment for justice and governance.
Development of a network of community paralegals, able to offer primary legal assistance in villages, police stations, prisons, and courts.
A critical mass of informed and empowered citizens, capable of demanding their rights and holding duty bearers accountable.

4. Project Progress So Far

Thanks to our partnership with GlobalGiving, we have already raised $63, an encouraging first step toward our goal of $30,000.
We are currently in the preparatory phase, focusing on identifying trainers and learners.
The official launch of the project is scheduled for November 2025.

Promote Access to Justice and Human Rights in DRC

The project "Promote Access to Justice and Human Rights in DRC" aims to protect and promote human rights and access to justice for vulnerable populations in rural areas of South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It addresses the urgent need for justice in often-overlooked communities, where poverty, lack of legal awareness, and inaccessibility to legal services are widespread.

Problem Statement

In rural areas of South Kivu, access to justice is extremely limited. Legal services are scarce, procedures are expensive, and most citizens are unaware of their rights. This situation leads to abuses, unresolved conflicts, and reinforces impunity. Justice becomes a luxury reserved for city dwellers.

Project Objectives

Provide free legal services to indigent individuals.
Strengthen the capacities of judicial actors on human rights.
Train community paralegals to expand service access.
Advocate for a more equitable institutional framework.
Build a critical mass of informed and engaged citizens.

Main Activities

Set up mobile legal clinics in rural areas.
Conduct community awareness campaigns on rights and legal remedies.
Train 50 community paralegals to support local populations.
Provide legal assistance in police stations, prisons, and courts.
Engage in dialogue with authorities to improve laws and enforcement.

Expected Results

Over 3,000 vulnerable individuals will gain access to legal assistance.
50 active paralegals will operate within their communities.
Improved knowledge of fundamental rights in 20 villages.
Strengthened advocacy for fair justice in the province.
