Greetings from Uganda!
Have you ever had one of those moments where you look back and think, “I don’t know how I got through that… but I did”? We’ve all had seasons like that—times that reshape us in ways we only understand later.
This idea has been showing up again and again in our Empower and Grow Mental Health Programs: that what you go through can become the very thing you grow through. And lately, one person’s journey has really brought that message to life for us.
When a participant from South Sudan first joined our sessions, they carried themselves in a way that made the weight of their story visible—quiet, guarded, tired. They had fled conflict, left family behind, and arrived in a new place where everything felt unfamiliar. They told us later that they weren’t sure healing was even possible anymore.
But healing rarely happens all at once. It shows up in tiny shifts.
In Empower, they explored practical skills for everyday life—problem-solving, setting small goals, and taking steps to regain a sense of control over their situation. They began to see that their experiences, as painful as they were, had also given them knowledge, insight, and resilience. One day, they realized that even small actions—speaking up in a group, sharing a story, or helping a neighbor—were signs of the strength they still carried. That realization felt like a breakthrough.
As they continued into the Grow program, their story evolved even more. They started to speak up with gentle encouragement for others who were struggling. They shared insights about rebuilding hope. And one day, they said something that stopped the whole room:
“I’ve now realize that the pain that I went through, I have grown through.”
That shift—from surviving to growing—is exactly why these programs exist. And it’s a message that echoes far beyond refugee experiences. We’re all carrying something. We’re all learning, in our own way, that growth can coexist with hardship, and sometimes even come from it.
Your support through GlobalGiving is what makes these moments possible. Thank you for helping create spaces where people rediscover their strength—and where new chapters of growth can begin.
Thank you for your continuous support towards mental health for refugees in Uganda!
