Rehab and Education for Disabled Children in India

Introduction 

This project's goal is to assist a local School that is not currently equipped or staffed to provide Physiotherapy and does not have the funding or resources to tackle this issue, so this project aims to equip the school with PT equipment, PT assistance/aide training as well as Emergency First Aid training. This will allow full capacity of rehabilitation with the goal to maximize functional control of the body or increase the gross motor function of the children.

In addition to capacity building of the staff through training and providing education to individuals, improved quality of care at the school has also helped prevent further physical deterioration of the children by funding equipment, we can create a lasting impact as this could increase the capacity that the school can handle for therapy and allow them to continue the work for years to come. PT will give these children a new lease in life and the best chance for taking control of their lives. We need $200 for a muscle simulator for the PT program.

Introduction 

Our project had just got off the ground and then COVID hit and schools closed and reopened online. With the situation in India getting worse and online teaching kicking off for a second academic online it looks like it might be a few more months before we can get back on track, but this might be a benefit as we are still under our fundraising target to ensure this project has the maximum impact..

This project pre-covid kicked off at a local school where we work and a large number of the students are registered disabled. The school is seriously under equipped to help these children so we started with the $300 raised to fund a local physiotherapist costing $80 a month to visit the school and run a group and 1:1 sessions with the children. Only after three months did we notice a difference but then COVID hit and the school was forced to close and the costs associated with a physio going to homes is above our current fundraising. 

We will continue to actively raise awareness and fun COVID compliant fundraising events so that when the school returns we can reboot our project, we also will take this time to raise funds for resources and equipment for the school and prepare basic training and techniques for the whole teaching staff to be able to introduce elements of support into daily teaching.
