Hope blooms in slums with the seeds of education

By Julia Matthew | Managing Director

Dear Patron,
There is a growing awareness and concern in Goa where the girls in slums lack access to stable, dignified economic opportunities. Poverty, lack of alternatives, and limited social protection drive many into high-risk situations such as trafficking and vulnerability. The unseen burden of trauma, stress, and lack of safe spaces can stunt growth, ambition, and self-worth, which results in abuse and health issues.
For girls, poor sanitation can mean health risks (infections, hygiene difficulties) and even barriers to education. The general lack of sanitation is a strong risk factor.
With the El Shaddai Education Programme, hundred girls from slums and the streets of Goa are able to attend school this year by enrolling them in El Shaddai schools and slum schools. It will protect them from child labour and early marriage, strengthen their sense of self-worth, and open doors to further learning. As these girls grow into empowered women, they uplift their families, influence their communities, and inspire future generations to value education and confidence in themself. They are currently enrolled in basic maths and English to perform well in class, and absenteeism will be minimised, which will give them the opportunity to join High School. Teachers are provided with training in teaching methodology.
We are committed to providing these hundred girls with opportunities that will empower them to identify their priorities and foster their personal and academic growth. The project provides them with sanitary pads, textbooks, uniforms, and other learning materials to prevent students from being lured by the lack of them.
We aspire to break the circle of exclusion and vulnerability. They will have greater personal power and independence.
With your valued support, we can advance our project and extend its positive impact. We sincerely appreciate your ongoing commitment to our cause. Together, we can build a safer, more secure, and brighter future.
With gratitude,
El Shaddai family
