Education for 1000 slum children in Goa

Thank you for helping us provide quality education to 482 children in the slums of Goa

Dear esteemed Friends,

This has been the crucial phase of the project as the COVID situation has improved and economic activities are coming back to normal. However, the third wave has not been ruled out, yet. taking into consideration all these presumptions and uncertainties, El Shaddai has resumed with all safety measures and strategies to meet the educational requirements and safety of all children living in the streets and slums of Goa.

The Slum Education has not stopped even during COVID-19. El Shaddai still continues to educate children in the slums where the children have no access to primary education, food or shelter. Every child has a desire to become something but due to the condition of the family the parents are not able to support the children with primary education. Not many families are able to send their children to school. The outreach workers from the shelters visit a number of slums in Goa everyday and conduct classes for the children.

Currently El Shaddai is running 21 Slum schools in Goa namely Margao – 6 schools with 161 children, Calangute–8 schools with 177 children and in Panjim–7 schools with 144 children. The total numbers of children attending the slum schools are 482. Some children are also enrolled in Formal Schools for further education and are provided with school facilities like uniform, school shoes, books, stationary, etc.

The children in the slums are taught alphabets, numbers with play cards, rhymes and moral stories in an activity based learning where the children find it easier to understand and special attention is given to children who are slow learners, besides slum schooling they also distribute monthly ration and hygiene kits cooked meals daily for the students with their families in slums. The outreach workers also conduct Awareness Programs for slum children and their parents, Health Checkups, Dental Checkup and Vaccination programs for the safety of the people. The children are happy to attend classes every day in the slums as they are also provided with meals every day.

Support to provide quality education to children

Dear wonderful supporters,

We are truly grateful to all our donors, sponsors and supporters who remain committed to supporting us going forward who have supported us through this difficult times. We are happy to present the report “Education for 1000 slum children” before our supporters.

Since June 2021 El Shaddai continued providing meals to the underprivileged children and marginalized people, vulnerable families, children and individuals, empowering destitute women and men and also providing education especially to the children who are facing shortages of food and shelter, medicines, hygiene kits and education.

Education is an essential component and fundamental rights of all children in India. It enhances their skills, personality and attitude. It is the foundation upon which we build our future. It is the only way by which a desired change and upliftment in the society can be achieved.

Currently we are running 39 slum schools namely at Margao, Calangute, Panjim and Vasco across the state of Goa. Slum outreach programme identifies homeless beneficiaries across the major cities and slums of Goa and provides educational facilities and Community health camps for the slum children and women. Outreach workers visit the children’s families and mobilize to send the children to school. Awareness program on the value of education was conducted for the children from slums.

During this emergency we continued educating more than one thousand slum children about safety measures like wearing masks, social distancing, and washing hands from time to time and still continue to teach about safety measures. In order to increase academic proficiency and to reduce dropout rate our trained teachers continued with the basic education. Our focus is to provide children with the opportunity to learn and develop. So, they can grow up to be an integral and healthy part of their communities. Parents and children are happy to have this slum school class since they don’t have to worry about their children’s education during COVID-19.

El Shaddai has ensured daily sustenance for the children and people, making sure no one has to sleep on an empty stomach.

Slum School Students

Dear friends,

Hope you are in good health!

We write to you during these very difficult times where the Corona pandemic has caused widespread loss of lives and destruction. El Shaddai team prays for your good health and well-being and that of your loved ones, family, and friends.

Sincere thanks from our side for your kind and generous support for the continuation of the slum school project in several remote slums in Goa.

El Shaddai has set up three daycare centers where they not only visit the children in slum communities but also help the children in need by providing them with the basic necessities like nutrition and education. Besides the shelter activities, there is also fieldwork and slum school being carried out in more than 20 slum areas. Our slum school was active till the month of May 2021 before the state government announced lockdown, with only markets open, the rest of the work was not active apart from a few government organizations. Schools were the first institution to be closed.

We have suspended our activities of slum schooling as per the guidelines of the Goa government for a month. Nevertheless, we are providing the families and our students from slums with grocery kits and cooked meals daily to keep them well-nourished during difficult times. We are reaching around 300 homeless and street people every day to feed them. Our staff regularly goes for field visits to make sure that none of the children is on-street without food, clothing, and shelter. If we find any of the kids we try to get them for daycare. If anyone is in need of Medical help, we provide them with some medical assistance and also help them to get future treatment if needed.
