Dear Friend,
El Shaddai aims to use education as a weapon to break through the cycle of poverty, creating opportunities for income, growth and sustainable development. Access to education and learning is nonexistent in any slum. Poor parents don't have enough resources to send their children to school and end up doing domestic chores or getting into rag-picking and other anti-social activities.
Our goal is to improve access and quality of education for children through enrollment of deprived children in schools and regular attendance, sponsoring their school fees, and providing uniforms, shoes, school supplies and educational materials. At present El, Shaddai is educating 500+ children in 2 districts and 5 major cities of Goa by running slum schools. Roopam, 12, lives with her parents and three siblings in the slums of Vasco. Her father is handicapped and her mother is a housemaid. Many years back, her family migrated from Karnataka to Goa in search of livelihood. She used to go to the village school to study, but after migration, she had to leave the school. She was always looking for an opportunity to study but could continue due to her family’s situation.
She was kept back to look after her younger siblings. The mother is the sole earner of the family and it was difficult for her to meet the needs of the 6 members and pay rent. She had no help from anyone. Besides being unaware of the importance of education, her parents didn't have any supporting documents necessary for her formal schooling either. So, Roopam always remained sad. One day our outreach worker happened to meet this girl and also convinced her parents how important education is. Then outreach workers started a slum school in the area where Roopam was staying so altogether we had 50 children who were attending the slum schooling in that area. These children were taught how to read and write and, we were preparing to enrol them in formal schools and we managed to do so. After school, these children come to our centre to attend tuition classes and even hot meals are served to them. Roopam not only got enrolled in the program but excelled in academics as well as in Art and dance.
This is one story of a girl who got the opportunity to start her schooling back, the same way we have so many stories to share. Our slum school teachers are working to help these children to continue their education whatever may be their situation. Roopam's parents are thankful for the Slum School Education program and vouch for this program to be a blessing in disguise for urban slum kids.
