Immersed in the heart of a busy neonatal unit

By Adam Hewitt-Smith | Trustee, Born on the Edge

Two months ago marked the beginning of our 4-week residential in-service neonatal training course for 15 nurses and doctors from across Eastern Uganda. During the month, our 15 participants immersed themselves in the heart of a busy neonatal unit — learning through lectures, simulation sessions, bedside teaching, and the daily rhythm of caring for our tiniest patients. It’s always a privilege to watch confidence grow, skills deepen, and a shared passion for newborn care come alive.
Four weeks later we proudly graduated our next cohort of Neonatal Champions — dedicated nurses, doctors and clinicians ready to make every tiny life matter in Uganda. We are using a multi-faceted approach to strengthen newborn care in the region. Smaller facilities do not have the volume of patients needed to produce champions.  A month in our neonatal unit at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital provides exposure to as many as 300 small and sick newborns. It provides a rich learning environment that encompasses clinical care, ward management, communication, empathy, teamwork and leadership. This intensive, residential one-month course is complemented by our 'Baby Bus' project that is visiting the same facilities. The Baby Bus provides specialist outpatient follow-up, hand-on mentoring in the smaller facilities and classroom based capacity building for all facility staff. Together we hope this will strengthen the ability of the facilities to manage some of the small and sick newborns in the region.
As always, we are incredibly grateful for our neonatal training team who lead all our efforts to save newborn lives. Our residential, in-service course was made possible through a beautiful new partnership between Born on the Edge, West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership in the UK, and the Uganda-UK Health Alliance with support from Global Health Partnerships, Health Education England, and Ugandan Ministry of Health. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this success.
It is your regular monthly donations that keep us going. Please find time to share our reports with five of your friends and encourage them to start their own regular donation through globalgiving. Every time you donate, newborn lives are saved.
