With Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine well into its third year, the humanitarian needs of affected communities continue to evolve and intensify. However, one thing remains constant: locally-led nonprofits are continuing to show up for their communities and neighbors through this devastating time. And they couldn't do it without your support, and for that, we can't thank you enough.

Thanks to your donations to the Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund, GlobalGiving has recently distributed 33 flexible grants to local organizations in Ukraine and organizations in neighboring countries where Ukrainians have been displaced.

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

  • UA Brokers Without Borders focuses on rebuilding infrastructure and private housing for people who lost their homes in the bombings and destruction. With support from GlobalGiving and other partners, they renovated and equipped a bomb shelter at a Kindergarten in Mykolaiv, allowing 250 children to return to safe learning conditions and stay protected during missile attacks.
  • Ukrainian Deminers Association is leading demining projects across the country, including along the more dangerous border zones. The nonprofit also offers assistance to those impacted by mining accidents and provides explosive ordnance risk education to help protect citizens from harm. UDA’s work is vital as Ukraine is one of the most saturated countries with mines, thanks to years of warfare on its soil.
  • The National Agency for Humanitarian Aid ZDOROVI is strengthening Ukraine’s healthcare system by supporting critical care and delivering the most essential medicines and equipment to frontline hospitals. With support from GlobalGiving, they have assisted more than 20,000 patients across over 30 medical facilities in some of the country’s most underfunded regions.
  • RememberUs is providing vital support to residents facing prolonged heating and electricity outages in the Kharkiv region due to Russian shelling. By supplying essential medicines, heating devices, power stations, and generators, RememberUs helped communities weather the harsh winter months.
  • Fundacja Klementyna is is helping hundreds of Ukrainian children and families integrate into their new homes in Poland by offering food parcels, hygiene kits, psychosocial support, and, whenever possible, housing assistance. Over the past two years, the organization has also expanded to support the elderly, offering the oldest refugees emergency aid and mental health support.
  • Rescue Now is offering children and their families a rare sense of safety, stability, and care amid the war at their “Litokryl” spaces. These centers provided psychological counseling, art therapy, and creative learning activities in fully equipped, child-friendly environments. As Bozhena, one of the teachers working at a Litokryl space, shared:

“[One child] Yaroslav had stopped speaking due to the trauma of war…Our first sessions were challenging; he] couldn't follow rules or see the point in engaging. Slowly, he transitioned from colors to words. Then, one day, he spoke. First in single words, then sentences, and finally, he laughed out loud, so joyfully that all the children at the table laughed with him. That day, he won his favorite speech-based game. His mother cried with happiness, and so did I. Because when war takes away a child's voice, restoring it means giving them back not just words, but themselves.”

Your continued support of the Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund makes it possible for local organizations to respond with agility, compassion, and deep understanding of their communities’ needs. And for some, like Rescue Now, it means that children like Yaroslav can find their voice again.

We remain committed to standing alongside these partners as they deliver critical aid and begin building toward long-term recovery.

Thank you for being part of this vital work.

With gratitude,
Oksana + GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
