Rio Slums: The Year of Transformation

Community-Led Growth in Vidigal: 2025 Impact Overview

Often overlooked, Brazil’s favelas are among the country’s strongest economic engines. Studies by Instituto Data Favela, CUFA (BR), and Favela Holding estimate that favela communities generate approximately R$300 billion per year—an amount greater than the GDP of most Brazilian states and larger than the combined economies of Peru and Uruguay. Favela Inc. exists to ensure this economic strength translates into real opportunity for the people who live there.

Working primarily in Favela do Vidigal, Favela Inc. connects talent, culture, and entrepreneurship with the resources needed to thrive. Our approach blends data, partnerships, and community leadership to create sustainable pathways in employment, education, creative expression, and environmental responsibility.

Economic Empowerment & Workforce Development

One of the most significant milestones this year was the launch of Mixtura Cocktail School, a professional training program designed to prepare local residents for careers in Rio de Janeiro’s hospitality sector. The pilot edition exceeded expectations: every enrolled student completed the program, participant satisfaction reached 100%, and five graduates secured employment shortly after completion. Beyond job placement, the program strengthened confidence and professional readiness among participants.

Entrepreneurship has also continued to grow through the Terra Fértil Store, a retail space located in Vidigal that showcases products created by favela residents. By mid-2025, more than 530 locally made items had been sold. International visitors account for a large share of purchases, often discovering the store after engaging with Favela Inc.’s community experiences. These sales directly support income generation and long-term professional development for local makers.

To further strengthen financial sustainability, Favela Inc. secured a partnership with a major global co-working operator. Through this collaboration, international teams can rent Brota, our innovation hub, creating a steady revenue stream that helps fund community programs and improves long-term operational stability.

Culture, Youth, and Creative Identity

Culture remains central to Favela Inc.’s work. Batucavidi, now completing eight years of activity, continues to transform the lives of children and teenagers through percussion and artistic education. As an institutional partner, Favela Inc. integrates Batucavidi into Favela Experience tours, allowing visitors to engage directly with the creative energy of Vidigal. The program reinforces essential values such as discipline, responsibility, self-esteem, and cultural pride—skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

At the end of 2025, Favela Inc. brought the community together with Brota no Brota, a closing cultural event held at Brota. The celebration connected local residents through music, dance, and shared artistic expression, reinforcing Brota’s role as both an innovation space and a cultural meeting point. The event served as a powerful reminder that culture is not an accessory to development, but one of its foundations.

Access, Innovation, and Opportunity

Through Bolsa Brota, Favela Inc. offers scholarships that give local students access to Brota’s infrastructure and creative environment. These scholarships allow emerging entrepreneurs and creatives to develop projects, collaborate, and explore new economic opportunities without financial barriers.

Meanwhile, Favela Experience continues to host dozens of immersive tours each month, offering visitors an honest and respectful introduction to Vidigal’s culture, businesses, and community initiatives. These experiences not only generate income but also shift narratives about favelas by centering local voices and leadership.

Environmental responsibility remains a growing focus through Recicla Comunidade, supported in partnership with Jornada Brasil and the City of Rio de Janeiro. The initiative strengthens waste collection and recycling efforts while sustaining a community garden that contributes to food security and environmental awareness. In 2025, global CEOs and their families participated in these experiences, expanding visibility and reinforcing international relationships.

2025 at a Glance

  • 5 residents employed through Mixtura Cocktail School, with full completion and satisfaction

  • 800+ locally produced items sold through Terra Fértil Store

  • 210+ monthly visitors engaging in community-led Favela Experience tours

  • 20+ children and youth supported through Batucavidi’s cultural programs

  • 10+ students benefiting from Bolsa Brota scholarships

  • Active recycling operations and a community garden maintained through Recicla Comunidade

What’s Needed to Scale Impact

To build on this momentum, Favela Inc. is seeking support for:

  • Equipment and infrastructure to expand Terra Fértil Store operations

  • Additional funding to grow Bolsa Brota and reach more local students

  • Sustained investment in cultural, educational, and environmental initiatives

  • Operational sponsorship to expand Favela Experience and future Mixtura cohorts

Moving Forward

Favela Inc. believes meaningful change starts from within the community. By investing in local talent, culture, and entrepreneurship, we help create a future where Vidigal grows on its own terms—rooted in dignity, creativity, and opportunity. Every partnership strengthens a model of development that recognizes the favela not as a problem to solve, but as a source of innovation and possibility.
