Winter Conditions in Displacement Camps in Northern Syria

By MUHAMMED DEEBEH | Project leader

Dear Donor

As winter arrives in northern Syria, thousands of displaced families living in informal camps face increasingly harsh and dangerous conditions. These camps, made up mostly of worn-out tents and fragile shelters, offer very little protection against the cold, heavy rains, and strong winds that characterize the winter season.

During this time of year, temperatures drop significantly, and many families lack the most basic necessities needed to stay warm. Blankets, winter clothing, heating fuel, and proper shelter materials are often unavailable or insufficient. As a result, children, the elderly, and the sick are particularly vulnerable to cold-related illnesses.

Unfortunately, the humanitarian support reaching these camps remains far below the actual needs. Due to funding shortages and the growing number of displaced families, many aid programs have been reduced or stopped entirely. This shortage of support has left thousands of families struggling to survive the winter months with very limited resources.

In many camps, rainwater floods tents and turns the ground into thick mud, making daily life extremely difficult. Families often spend days trying to repair damaged tents or protect their belongings from water and cold winds. Children in particular suffer the most, as they lack warm clothing and safe spaces to stay during storms.

The situation highlights the urgent need for increased humanitarian assistance to support displaced families during the winter season. Providing heating materials, winter clothes, blankets, food assistance, and shelter improvements can make a critical difference in protecting vulnerable families from the harsh effects of winter.

Despite the immense challenges, humanitarian teams and volunteers continue to work on the ground to support as many families as possible. However, the scale of the crisis requires stronger and more sustained support to ensure that displaced families in northern Syria can endure the winter with dignity and safety.
