In November 2025, together with 30 women environmental defenders, we participated in the 30th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP30). This edition was particularly significant for us: it was the first time that an event like COP was held in the Amazon, a region central to discussions on the climate crisis, biodiversity, and indigenous people rights.
Women environmental defenders traveled from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. We built a common agenda and participated in various public events.
There was also room for self-care. As an environmental defender from Paraguay pointed out: “Climate change is not only a climate crisis but also a humanitarian crisis, in which women no longer have time to take care of ourselves, but only to take care of others. And when the leader gets sick, who takes care of her?”
That is why, in between an intense agenda with multiple panels and debates at the forum, there was an outing to the river to create a space for rest, support, and reconnection. Recognizing this aspect is key to integrating care for people and care for the environment as part of the same agenda to sustain life in the territories.
