Veterinary Update: Compassion in Action

August brought a wave of veterinary activity across our project, each visit a testament to our unwavering commitment to the health and wellbeing of the animals in our care. While the month was medically intensive, it underscored the heart of our mission: ensuring every animal receives the attention, comfort, and dignity they deserve.

Spotlight on Fushan: A Journey of Healing

One of the most significant cases this month involved Fushan, a cherished member of our animal family. Our care team, which monitors each animal’s health daily, noticed Fushan experiencing pronounced discomfort in his leg. Immediate action was taken to arrange a veterinary consultation.

Dr. Jana, a trusted expert and long-time supporter of our work, kindly visited to assess him. Her diagnosis revealed advanced arthritis, with the pain stemming from deterioration in his femur, a serious condition causing him considerable distress.

To manage his pain and improve his quality of life, Fushan has been prescribed specialized medication. Our team continues to monitor him closely, ensuring he receives loving, attentive care every step of the way.

Fushan’s assessment also became a powerful learning moment. Veterinary intern students from Egas Moniz School of Health & Science were present during the visit, gaining firsthand experience in compassionate care and clinical evaluation. Their involvement reflects the vital role of education and collaboration in advancing animal welfare.

At Cheetah Experience, the well-being and health of our incredible animals are our highest priority. Over the past period, we have invested approximately R400 000 solely in veterinary care—reflecting our unwavering commitment to providing them with the best possible medical attention. However, we are deeply grateful to the generous veterinarians who have offered their expertise and services free of charge, helping us care for our residents with compassion and dedication.

These veterinary expenses do not include costs such as transportation, staff salaries, facility maintenance, or general animal upkeep. While veterinary care remains one of our largest financial responsibilities, we are also facing increasing challenges due to rising fuel costs, inflation, and higher prices for essential supplies. Additionally, the ongoing expense of medications—particularly for animals with chronic health conditions—places a significant strain on our resources.

We are thrilled to have received sponsorship for the construction of a small yet highly practical onsite clinic, which will make veterinary care more accessible and help reduce costs. This facility will allow us to provide faster medical assistance to our beloved animals. However, while the sponsor generously covered much of the building expenses, we still need support to equip the clinic with vital tools, machines, and medications.
