6000 Street Children in Nepal: Give Them a Home

A little end of the year note

It's been a really busy year at Our Sansar - we are happy to report that we managed to assist street children, child labourers, children who have been victims of trafficking and violence. Now, these children have much higher chances for an independent, happy life.

Our focus has always been and continues to be education. We are in the middle of preparing our improved in house curriculum that we will use across all our projects - the curriculum focuses on numeracy and literacy skills and the main aim is to prepare the children for the mainstream education.

One of the children that we have been recently helping through our Child Helpline is 14 years old Raju who comes from a very poor family – they cannot afford basic necessities so he was forced by his parents to work at a hotel where he started to sell alcohol and cigarettes. He was then repeatedly beaten by the hotel owners if he didn’t reach their targets and he escaped. His mother’s family helped him find other work but the situation repeated itself and he escaped again. Local government worker from Birgunj found Raju working at local people’s houses and being abused again. She contacted our staff that investigated the situation further and brought Raju to our Helpline. Even though Raju had been to school before he was not able to read or write when he joined us. Now we have an individual learning plan for him and he is doing really well and wants to finish his education.

Sadly, there are more and more cases of children in a similar situation to Raju that need urgent assistance. Our staff do whatever they can to reach all of them and to help them in a timely manner. We are very proud of them as often it is a very challenging work - and they are doing it all brilliantly.

The children from the Child Helpline and from the Children's Home are jointly planning their Christmas/New Year trip to a beautiful park so we will share some nice photos from that in the next report. And we are all looking forward to the new year.

We have a full house!

Recently we had 5 new boys joining in our children's home. We are very pleased to say that all have settled nicely now. One of our boys required very intensive counselling due to the trauma but he is much better now. All the boys to go to school, and Subash is continuing his university.

We had some very tough experiences in the past couple of months whilst trying to help as many children as possible. We came across one lady who was begging in front of a hospital with her 7 children, some very very young. Her husband is in prison so there is noone to look after them. We took some of the children to our Helpline to provide them with shelter, education and care and we were discussing a possibility of assisting the lady with setting up a small tea shop for her so that she can at least afford a room and food for herself and the children. The lady's parents in law found out about it and forced her to refuse any help of this kind despite not being able to assist her themselves - as the family are from a slightly higher caste, it was seen as not suitable for a woman to work outside. So they have been forcing her to beg instead of working. 4 children as still with us so they are safe but the smallest ones, including a baby, are with the mum, sleeping on the street. We are still trying to talk to the family to see what we can do to help but we do come across so many of these culturally different scenarios on a daily basis and sometimes are just not able to help.

From a bit more positive news, we have a new social worker at the child helpline and she is doing wonderfully well, trying to visit as many children in need as possible and to help quickly and efficiently. Also, the monsoon season should be coming to an end soon - and that means end to our child helpline building flooding that keeps happening all over again this year.

We will soon be looking to try and set up a library for the children at the helpline so we will update you with the progress of that!

And thank you so much for all the support, the situation in southern Nepal is quite bad at the moment and so many children needing assistance. So we do appreciate everything you have done to help!

More children living and working on the streets

Recently, we have been overwhelmed by the amount of children needing assistance in Birgunj, Janakpur and beyond. We are now expanding our Outreach Programme and hoping to locate most of the children that have nowhere to turn to for help in Province 2 in southern Nepal.

The elections are coming up in Nepal and many political candidates are preoccupied with trying to win the votes but the actual issues facing local communities are being totally neglected - nobody wants to make any decisions now as everything might change again in the next month or so. It took us a very long time and a lot of effort to locate a brother of the boy that had been abused in the most horrendous ways and forced to work at the abuser's hotel. We had suspicions that the brother might also be forced to work and we were right - we are now trying to move him to our centre and work out the ways we can help him and prosecute the abusers.

On the 12th April we celebrated the International Day for Street Children - the children from our and other centres took part in an arts workshop and had many games organised. We also invited around 20 children that we are trying to help on the streets and within the community. They all had such fun and were very happy with the food and care provided. We are in touch with them on a daily basis and hope that most will join us at least during the day when they can receive education, extra curricular activities, food and can socialise with our other children. Sadly, most of them are being forced to beg or work on the streets by their parents so we are liaising with the families on the best future plans for the children.

In the next 2 weeks we are launching a new project so we will keep you updated with these developments as well!
