6000 Street Children in Nepal: Give Them a Home

The past three months have been really eventful for us and our boys. 

First of all, we have opened a Day Care Centre in the centre of Birgunj to help more street children. Our boys were very involved in decorating the new building and making it nice for any new children. The Centre is providing food, classes and activities to any children that turn up on our doorstep or those that our staff inform about the services provided. In addition to that, some of the children stay overnight at the Centre. Some of the boys living on the street have a place to sleep, i.e. grandparents, but during the day they escape and refuse to go to school, instead begging or collecting plastic bottles on the streets to earn money. We are providing them with informal classes at the moment with a view of sending them to school as soon as they are ready. 

We have set up and emergency telephone number for any children needing assistance and now are also registering that number with 3 other districts nearby. This way we can reach many more children living on the streets. 

We had a wonderful volunteer from Slovakia staying for about a month at our children’s home. The boys have learnt some Slovakian which made them very proud of themselves and they keep showing off with their newly gained knowledge. 

During school holidays some of the boys visited their extended families and we are hoping that by next year more can be permanently linked back with the families. It takes time but it is the main aim of the project. 

We also have a new counsellor that travels to Birgunj once a month from Kathmandu and provides the boys and our staff with extra training and activities. So the boys are always kept busy and they love it!

Last few months have been very busy and exciting for our boys. 

In April we celebrated the International Day for Street Children by organising a dance competition between 12 children's homes in the Birgunj, Hetauda and Chitwan areas. Our boys didn't win but had so much fun and made many new friends. It was a great day with all the children showing off their talents and now the boys are practising their dancing even more often. As per some participants 'it was the best event they have ever attended'. 

The boys also enjoyed a few days' art therapy and decorated the walls at the home with some amazing drawings and paintings. On top of that, they had a few volunteers coming and helping out with maths, guitar and other classes. Our wonderful trustee helped out massively with the transformation of the main hall and the study room. 

The boys finished their school year in April and we are so proud to announce that a few of them were first in their class, and all boys passed their exams. Now the new year has started so more studying and they are all enjoying that a lot. We think we have a few geniuses at our home!

Our oldest boy whom we had linked back with his family, has now finished his school and joined Our Sansar team as a project assistant. It is great to see him want to do social work and help other boys who experienced similar life on the streets to him. He will soon attend college and work at our home after his classes.
