Equipping the women to be independent

By Julia Matthew | Managing Director

El Shaddai Charitable Trust has established 3 Community development Centres namely Goodnews Centre, Tremara Community Centre (TCC), and Ashraya Community Centre (ACC). These Centres are established with an intention to provide vocational training for young individuals to develop various skills in them.

We offer free courses in computer, tailoring, bag-making; mehandi art work, crochet, knitting, beautician course, etc. with an objective to empower housewives by training them in various skills/trade and opening avenues to generate income.  everyday 2 batches of tailoring classes are running at our centres. each centre has around 30 ladies pursuing the course each day. And around 12 ladies are engaged in mehandi art work.

Adult education and English speaking classes are held for illiterate individuals who have a desire for learning. Altogether we have 1I5 ladies for adult literature and spoken english class. the class is taken by Teacher Afrin.

Community health work and outreach programmes are regularly conducted in  various slum areas. This helps in communicating with a number of families about the importance of education, family planning, cleanliness and hygiene practices.

We also organize awareness programmes on a number of topics which include various diseases, adolescent health programme, family planning, safe garbage and plastic disposal, importance of immunization and polio, breast cancer, saving girl, etc.

our Centres are currently reaching out approximately 200 students and ladies per day. we serve them by providing Formal and non formal tuition for children, as well as skilled courses for Adults. we have seen a successful year of development in different events.

  • On 9th January 2020, ACC organized a awareness talk on the importance of eating healthy food in Chicalim slum. The talk was given by one of the staff of El Shaddai. We had a wide audience who were interested in attending the talk. The talk proved to be very effective for the people.
  • 10th January, Our centres organized Mehandi Competition for the children. We had around 40 children who attended the program and were all excited to draw Mehandi on their friends hand.
  • On 14th February 2020, Sunil Sharma our staff conducted  awareness talk on body cleanliness at the centre followed by excercise which was led by Miss Sita.
  • On 20th February 2020, we had organized a talk to raise awareness about the causes, effects, symptoms and precautions of breast cancer. The speakers for the day were 2 well known doctors from a specialized hospital. The talk was attended by 36 ladies from our community. All the women were provided with refreshments at the end of the session.
  • On 22nd February 2020, Ashraya Community Centre had organized a medical camp at our centre and slum set-ups with the help of the government health centres for the benefit of the people living in that locality. we had 3 specialized doctors along with 10 members from Lions club, Dabolim to address the public. they also checked the sugar level and blood pressure of around 65 people who attended the camp. Through this we were able to provide free medical check-ups, medicines, vaccines, polio doses, vitamins, etc. for the needy and deprived.
  • On 3rd March 2020, we conducted awareness talk on coping with stress and depression. The talk was given by our staff and we had around 45 people who attended the talk.
  • On 7th March 2020, we celebrated International Woman’s day. We invited all the women from our community and welcomed them with a bouquet of flowers. We had around 7 members from Lions club of Dabolim as our chief guest who gave  the speech on International women’s day. we had organised dance and games for the women  followed by snacks. There were around 85 women who attended the programme.

All the activities were conducted regularly till 24th March 2020. Due to the sudden lockdown we were not able to conduct the classes. For the safety of the women and the children, we had to close down the centre till the government’s further notice. We have advised our children and the vocational training ladies to take all the necessary precautions to keep themselves safe and protected from the virus.

It is because of many wonderful donors and supporters that El Shaddai has been able to provide for and help children and women with education and vocational training. It is truly a blessing to know that there are so many people who care for the deprived women and children and are willing to help. All the ladies are truly grateful for your continued support in improving their standard of living. We look forward to your continuous support and love from your side
