A Voice and Future for Women of Zimbabwe

By Tyrone Bennett | CEO of Action Change

Hey everyone,

Ever feel like the world is just too much to fix? We get it. It is easy to look at the massive problems and feel like there is no point in even trying. But here is the secret we have learned on the ground: we do not need to fix everything at once. Sometimes, we just need to get one girl on a bus with one of our retired teacher chaperones.

Think about this. There are hundreds of thousands of women and girls in rural Zimbabwe who are totally invisible to the system. They do not have a birth certificate, which means no school, no bank account, and no legal or political voice. It sounds like an unsolvable issue, right? But the registration is actually free. The only thing standing in the way is the 3 to 6 hour drive to the capital to get the paperwork done and knowing how to navigate the system.

A return bus ticket is only 12 to 18 dollars for a girl and a chaperone. That is the price of a couple of coffees, but for these girls, it is the key to finally owning their own future.

We are not sending these girls alone. Many are too young, and the process is a labyrinth. That is why we have a team of retired local teachers who are trained in the process and have built real relationships at the registration center. They go with the girls to ensure every single trip is a success.

Why is this so urgent? Because in Zimbabwe, the hurdles are real. There is deep-seated gender discrimination where people still say, "Oh, women do not need papers." Then there are the social and economic factors, the cost of travel and a total lack of information. Because they are unregistered, these women cannot vote, cannot hold formal employment, and cannot open their own bank accounts. This is the part that hits the hardest: their hard-earned money often goes straight into a man's account, leaving them with no agency over their own labor. They cannot own land, cannot inherit family estates, and have zero legal protection. This is exactly why we see girls marrying as young as 14 through arranged marriages. It is a knock-on effect that traps generation after generation, and we are determined to stop it.

We had a brilliant start with a 4,000 dollar grant, but we are looking to grow our community online. We have 7 amazing donors so far and we would love for you to jump in with us. For every 20 dollars, we can send one girl to get registered. Last month, we sent two with the funds we raised, but we know we can do more. It is an easy process when you have the right help, and our team has the contacts to ensure every trip results in an identity.

Here is the plan. We are jumping into the Little by Little campaign on GlobalGiving from March 17th to the 20th. Because they match donations up to 50 dollars at 50 percent, your money works harder.

Your 50 dollar gift actually gets 7 girls registered instead of 5!

We are not trying to change the entire world in a day. We are just trying to help one girl after another claim her identity. If we can get 1,000 of you to join us this year with a small gift, we could help over 100 girls get a real fighting chance.

Mark your calendars for March 17th. We would be stoked if you shared this with your friends and family. Let us keep this moving and just keep showing up for each other. It is amazing what we can do when we stop worrying about the massive pile and just focus on the next bus fare.

Thanks for being part of the team. We love having you with us!
