Service Learning groups at Mal Pais

By Kate Robey | Head of Operations

Dear Supporter,

We recently hosted another service project for volunteers from the USA. This time, the location was our bilingual early learning centre in Mal Pais and the work was full manual labour!

With our wooden outdoor playgrounds on their last legs, it was obviously time to create a new play space for all of our adventurous students. The plans were made to create an interactive sandpit that would also serve as a herb garden and hopefully look like a natural river bed and keep us on budget. The weather was Costa Rican hot and the sweat started to pour shortly after the project began. We were tasked with lifting heavy river stones, buckets and wheelbarrows of white gravel and soil from a neighbour’s property.

We still have much more to do, but the effort and team spirit from all the volunteers was tremendous, with students cheering us on as we worked. The students certainly are eager for this new project to be finished.

The project also helped host another service project last month with IB diploma students from the island of Jersey, U.K. visiting Futuro Verde and forging a relationship with the school for a future exchange program and also continual collaborative projects between the schools using technology as a means for the students to communicate on topics such as social justice and environmental issues.

In such a short space of time we have literally changed the common learning experience for students in this rural area, and we thank you all for supporting and helping this vision became an absolute reality.

With Gratitude,

Sonya, Futuro Verde
