At SOLE Colombia we have long been asking ourselves a practical question: How can we make it easier for more communities to create their own spaces for learning with technology?
Across Colombia, more than 40 communities, many of them survivors of the armed conflict, have been building Self-Organized Learning Environments (SOLEs) where children, youth, and families gather around shared computers to explore Big Questions together. These spaces have shown that when communities connect to the Internet collectively, something powerful happens: curiosity grows, confidence returns, and new possibilities begin to emerge.
Over the past months, our team has been working on a new step in this journey: a lighter, simpler, and more accessible infrastructure that communities can build themselves. We call it the SOLE Lab-in-a-Box.
The idea is simple but transformative. Instead of requiring complex construction or specialized infrastructure, the entire structure can arrive in a single box and be assembled collaboratively by the community. The materials are lightweight, the design is modular, and the process of building it becomes part of the learning experience itself.
During the recent SOLEro Movement gathering in Bogotá in February, participants had the opportunity to see this idea come to life. Together, they assembled one of these new SOLE Labs in a single day. People joined in the process connecting pieces, experimenting with the structure, and imagining how similar spaces could soon appear in their own territories.
What emerged was more than a structure. It was a glimpse of how the SOLE methodology can travel further and reach communities that still lack spaces where technology can be explored collectively.
The SOLE Lab-in-a-Box helps remove one of the practical barriers many communities face: creating a welcoming place where people can gather around technology, ask questions, and learn together. By making the lab easier to transport, assemble, and replicate, we open the door for many more communities to create their own environments for curiosity and discovery.
The impact of these spaces can be profound. Inside them, children search for answers to Big Questions, young people begin to see technology as a tool for creation rather than distraction, and communities rediscover their capacity to learn and solve problems together and use Internet in groups.
Each new SOLE Lab becomes another doorway into The Library of the Future, a growing network of community learning spaces where people connect to the Internet not alone, but together. Because the Internet we imagine is not a place of isolation, but a shared space for curiosity, dialogue, and collective imagination.
And sometimes, the journey toward that future can begin with a single box.

Un SOLE Lab que puede viajar a cualquier lugar
Queridos amigos y amigas,
En SOLE Colombia llevamos tiempo haciéndonos una pregunta muy práctica: ¿cómo podemos facilitar que más comunidades creen sus propios espacios para aprender con tecnología?
En Colombia, más de 40 comunidades, muchas de ellas sobrevivientes del conflicto armado, han venido construyendo Entornos de Aprendizaje Autoorganizado (SOLE, por sus siglas en inglés), donde niños, jóvenes y familias se reúnen alrededor de computadores compartidos para explorar juntos Grandes Preguntas. Estos espacios han demostrado que cuando las comunidades se conectan a Internet de manera colectiva, ocurre algo poderoso: crece la curiosidad, se fortalece la confianza y empiezan a surgir nuevas posibilidades.
Durante los últimos meses, nuestro equipo ha estado trabajando en un nuevo paso dentro de este camino: una infraestructura más ligera, sencilla y accesible que las propias comunidades puedan construir por sí mismas. A esta iniciativa la llamamos SOLE HUM, Hágalo Usted Mismo.
La idea es simple pero transformadora. En lugar de requerir construcciones complejas o infraestructura especializada, toda la estructura puede llegar en una sola caja y ser ensamblada colaborativamente por la comunidad. Los materiales son livianos, el diseño es modular y el proceso de construcción se convierte en parte de la experiencia de aprendizaje.
Durante el reciente encuentro del Movimiento SOLEro en Bogotá, en febrero, los participantes tuvieron la oportunidad de ver esta idea cobrar vida. Juntos ensamblaron uno de estos nuevos SOLE Labs en un solo día. Personas de distintas edades participaron en el proceso, conectando piezas, experimentando con la estructura e imaginando cómo espacios similares podrían pronto aparecer en sus propios territorios.
Lo que surgió fue más que una estructura. Fue una muestra de cómo la metodología SOLE puede viajar más lejos y llegar a comunidades que aún no cuentan con espacios donde la tecnología pueda explorarse colectivamente.
El SOLE HUM, Hágalo Usted Mismo, ayuda a superar una de las barreras prácticas que enfrentan muchas comunidades: crear un lugar acogedor donde las personas puedan reunirse alrededor de la tecnología, formular preguntas y aprender juntas. Al facilitar el transporte, el armado y la replicación del laboratorio, abrimos la puerta para que muchas más comunidades creen sus propios entornos de curiosidad y descubrimiento.
El impacto de estos espacios puede ser profundo. Dentro de ellos, los niños buscan respuestas a Grandes Preguntas, los jóvenes empiezan a ver la tecnología como una herramienta de creación y no solo de distracción, y las comunidades redescubren su capacidad de aprender, resolver problemas juntas y utilizar Internet de manera colectiva.
Cada nuevo SOLE Lab se convierte en una nueva puerta hacia La Biblioteca del Futuro, una red creciente de espacios de aprendizaje comunitario donde las personas se conectan a Internet no en soledad, sino juntas. Porque el Internet que imaginamos no es un lugar de aislamiento, sino un espacio compartido de curiosidad, diálogo e imaginación colectiva.
Y a veces, el camino hacia ese futuro puede comenzar con una sola caja.
