Imagining Another Internet: The SOLEro Movement

By Isabel Tafur | Arquitecta de futuros

Dear friend,

Something powerful happened in Bogotá on February 4th and 5th. For two days, representatives from more than 40 SOLE communities across Colombia gathered with educators, partners, and members of the SOLE network to explore a shared question: What happens when communities come together to imagine and build another possible Internet?

The encounter was not simply a meeting. It was a living demonstration of what the Library of the Future can become. Communities that have been working together for years, many of them survivors of the armed conflict, arrived carrying stories, questions, and dreams from their territories. They came not only to learn, but also to share what they have discovered: that technology can be something very different when it is used collectively.

Throughout the gathering, the SOLEro Movement took shape as a space of experimentation, curiosity, and co-creation. Participants explored new practices for collective learning and new ways of connecting communities that often remain invisible in traditional educational and technological systems.

One of the most powerful moments was the collective construction of a SOLE Lab, a learning space built collaboratively in just one day. People of all ages participated in assembling the structure, transforming it into more than a physical place: it became a symbol of how communities can build their own infrastructures for learning.

Participants also explored SOLE Voltaje, an initiative that invites communities to imagine and manage their own pathways to connectivity. In regions where reliable Internet access is still limited, this approach opens new possibilities for communities to connect on their own terms and to use technology to address the questions that matter most to them.

The encounter also introduced SOLE++, a set of practices that combine self-organized learning with artistic exploration and hands-on creation. Through simple yet meaningful experiences, participants reflected on what it means for knowledge, communities, and ideas to be truly alive.

What emerged during those two days was not a single project or solution, but something much more alive: a growing movement of people who believe that learning, curiosity, and collective creativity can transform how technology is used. Across conversations, experiments, and shared laughter, a common realization surfaced: when communities connect to ask and explore Big Questions together, new possibilities begin to emerge.

The SOLEro Movement is still unfolding, but its direction is clear. Communities are moving from consuming technology individually to using it collectively to learn, to create, and to imagine futures that respond to their own realities. And perhaps the most beautiful part of the gathering was the feeling that this is only the beginning. The Library of the Future is not a place. It is a network of relationships, questions, and communities learning together.

Thank you for helping make this possible.

Your support continues to connect communities that are discovering their voice, reclaiming their agency, and building new possibilities one Big Question at a time.

With gratitude,

The SOLE Colombia Team

Imaginando otro Internet juntos: el Movimiento SOLEro

Queridos amigos y amigas,
