Teaching Reading at a New Place! (Q4 2025)
By Stuart Patience | Board Member
Dear Supporters,
A few months ago, we did not yet know that such a significant change was coming. But when we ‘suddenly’ found a new office space, we were given the opportunity to partner with a local community centre and come closer to our roots again: serving underprivileged children in urban areas.
In this new office, the upper floor of the building is now used for the work of Yayasan Tunas Aksara, while most of the ground floor is dedicated to reading classes (with our material) for children from the neighbourhood. Through this new location, we can see firsthand how our materials are used and provide direct mentoring to the local volunteers as the children learn.
We have only just moved in and are still in the process of getting everything fully operational. In our next update, we hope to share more photos so you can get a better impression of the new space.
We are also grateful that a number of new partnership opportunities have opened up in training volunteers who support children from underprivileged families. At the same time, it is always a challenge to secure sufficient funding to sustain this work. If you (or someone you know) shares our vision to expand our work with these communities, you are warmly invited to make a contribution through our GlobalGiving page.
Ayo! Suka Membaca!

Dedicated Volunteers (Q3 2025)
By Stuart Patience | Board Member
Dear Supporters,
We’re happy to share another update on our work focusing on Jakarta’s urban poor!
Dedicated Volunteers
At a local community center, one of our passionate volunteers teaches small reading classes every weekday. Some of the children join to prepare for school, while others need extra help to catch up. These sessions are more than just reading practice, they are the first steps in building a strong foundation for lifelong learning. And it’s inspiring to see volunteers who truly care about these children’s futures. Step by step, they are helping kids gain the confidence and skills they need. And thanks to your support, you are part of this impact!
Train Tracks
In our last update, we shared about volunteers working in a community near the train tracks. These community members are looking forward to be trained and use our reading materials to teach local children. They are already taking small steps, and their passion is clear. But to move forward, we still need funding. With your help, we can train these volunteers and give them the resources they need: levelled reading books and the SSM curriculum.
Can you help?
Do you know someone who might want to support this initiative? Or would you consider making a donation yourself?
When we train and equip volunteers in urban poor areas, we are not only helping children today, we are investing in long-term change for families and communities. As always, thank you for being part of this journey!

Project Update (Q2 2025)

Dear Supporters,
We’re happy to share another update on our work focusing on Jakarta’s urban poor!
The Story of Riani
One of our volunteers at a local community center teaches small groups of children from Monday to Friday. Some of them use these reading lessons as preparation for elementary school, while others join because they struggle to keep up at school. One of the children is Riani. It quickly became clear that she has a learning delay and finds it very hard to learn to read. Last year, she joined the lessons but we didn’t see much improvement.
This year, thanks to the dedication and hard work of the volunteer, we can already see her recognizing letters and even some words! This is a huge step for Riani, and it feels like a whole new world is opening up for her. Finally, she sees what others see, and the smile on her face shows how proud she is of her achievement!
Next to train tracks
And stories like this, inspire us to look for other possibilites in this area. In 2025 we would love to train volunteers in at least 2 new locations. In one area, next to the train tracks in an urban poor community, we have already found volunteers. We are now waiting for funding to equip them. So, if you know someone who might be interested, or if you want to make a donation yourself, we promise it will be put to good use!
Thank you, as always, for your support in our work here in Indonesia.
Salam Literasi,
