Summer has arrived at the ranch, with temperatures already in the high 90’s. People often ask how the burros deal with the heat. They deal with it very well. Wild donkeys originated in deserts and savannas in northern Africa from Morocco to Somalia, in the Arabian Peninsula and in the Middle East. So, they are very much at home in semi-arid regions like Southern California.
When not sun bathing, a favorite pastime of our burros, they do enjoy hanging out in the shade. Our burros are also very “sunwise” and know it is important to stay hydrated during hot weather.
The biggest challenge for our burros is the flies that accompany summer temperatures. The flies are hardest on our senior burros. Our volunteers work hard to keep fly masks on everyone. The burros really seem to enjoy removing fly masks from each other. We also cover many of the burros’ legs to protect them from fly bites. We use topical fly deterrents on the burros as well as a feed-through product that prevents the development of fly larvae.
In spite of the challenges that the flies bring we are sure the burros are enjoying the sunny, blue skies after a long, wet winter. Thank you for supporting all that goes into providing the best possible care for our burros, regardless of the season. Thank you for being a Burro Buddy!
