Become a Burro Buddy!

After an unusually wet December for San Diego, the burros are loving our sunny winter days. Everyone is doing well. Ethel lost a little bit of weight this fall so she was moved into our smaller group of burros. This means she is back with her buddy Fred which makes everyone very happy. This smaller group consists of our older burros, Ellie Mae, Reno, Fred, and now Ethel. We supplement their hay with an increased amount of pelleted feed. Pelleted feed can be digested much more efficiently.

This month we celebrated Valentine’s Day. Sonny, our honorary “Belgian Burro” loves being the center of Don Telford’s holiday photos. Jack was not completely sure he could trust Sonny’s fondness of our Valentine Bear.

Of course, even in San Diego, Mother Nature likes to remind us it is still winter. This week the ranch had a light coating of snow. As pretty as it looks in the photos, it didn’t last long under our blue skies.

Fly masks have given way to the beginning of what will be wooly winter coats on our burros. It is actually the shortening of the days that trigger winter coats to begin growing. Before long they will look like wooly mammoths.

Sadly, we have lost two members of our Burro Brigade. Keno passed away in August following a laminitis episode. We lost Jill earlier this month to advanced liver disease. As heartbroken as we were by both losses, we are grateful for your support. By being a Burro Buddy, you not only fund their daily care, you also help fund their medical needs. Both Keno and Jill needed intense veterinary care, with multiple appointments, blood draws, and medications. Thanks to your support, we were able to give both girls the best care possible. When it became clear that neither of these beautiful burros was responding to the treatment you support gave them both the greatest gift of all, a peaceful, pain free passing.
