6000 Street Children in Nepal: Give Them a Home

Supporting more and more children in Nepal

With more than 80 children attending our classes at the Helpline and all the other children that we are supporting via the Helpline, on the street or in the community, it has been a very busy period for us.

One of the children attending our classes suffered from a bad case of TB. We then tested their 6 siblings and all apart from 1 tested positive. Parents are also ill. Following the doctor's advice we have now tested all other children and staff and just waiting for the results. We are hoping that everyone is okay, so far all children are staff are healthy. For the affected family, our staff prepared a monthly support package of nutritious food and basic hygiene kits to strengthen their immune systems and help them recover quicker. It's heart-breaking to come across families that are not able to feed their children properly on a daily basis. We are planning to help the parents with better income opportunities once they recover so that they can become more self sufficient. When they recover, the children will all attend our classes at the Helpline where they can also get healthy food.

This is just one of the many difficult cases that we have had to deal with recently. Luckily, in many cases there is a solution - sometimes it takes a very long time to help one child or family but we don't give up. We always try and show the children and their families the paths that they can take, and then they can make an informed decision themselves.

It has not been all doom and gloom though - we've had so much fun with the children during many outings, activities, there is always noise and laughter at the Helpline and at the Children's Home! Being in Nepal means a lot of festivals to celebrate and being at our Children's Home means a lot of birthday parties!

We are now working on a few new things and testing some new approaches to be able to help even more children. We will keep you all updated.

New communities that we're working with

Communities is Nepal observe many holidays - and the biggest ones, Dashain and Diwali, are taking place throughout October. Our children are being given new clothes and some delicious food throughout the festive season, and they are having a lot of fun. We are always ensuring that they celebrate all the important occasions, same as all other children in the area.

Just before the holidays, our staff were vigorously doing research on new communities near to Birgunj that need our support. These are mainly communities that have been denied access to basic necessities such as education for generations. Most parents cannot read or write, and they do not recognize the importance of education. Majority of the children do not go to school at all – some are enrolled into a local school but do not attend the classes. The children mainly belong to a Dom caste, one of the Dalit castes that tend to live near the markets from where they pick up food that has often gone off and use that for their meals. There is a huge issue with alcohol in the communities that we assist and most money earned by the parents is being spent on alcohol on the same day as they are being paid for their road sweeping jobs (most people within the community do the same job). The children tend to spend most of their days on the streets, either begging or collecting rubbish.

Our Child Helpline is very busy now with around 80 children coming for classes – so a lot of noise and laughter everywhere!

We are also conducting monthly meetings with the parents to ensure we can raise awareness about the importance of education with the aim of enrolling all the children into regular school. Some of children (and parents) do not have birth certificates or citizenship papers so we are also helping them with obtaining those.

All in all, we are very grateful to all our staff for the dedication and really hard work – thanks to them the children are inspired now and started to have dreams about their futures.

Bright future ahead of our children

Community visit

It's exams time now for our older boys who are attending college. 6 of the boys are those that came back from India after working there for almost a year, and they will be going back there straight after the exams. This time, they will go back to different employers as now they have more experience (and they are very good at what they do!) and they can choose their next place of work. After the feedback they got from their previous place of work and after some of the other resort owners saw the boys at work, they have had quite a few offers of work and had to refuse most of them. We are so proud of them.

In the meantime, we started more community classes - we have new 55 children coming for classes at our Child Helpline and 40 new children are receiving our classes within the community. The classes only started a couple of weeks ago so we will be monitoring the progress closely and making any necessary changes. So far all the new children are having warm up classes, basic literacy, hygiene, team work and building self confidence. At the moment we are renting one space within the community on a temporary basis and are working with the village committee to make a nice community space for those that can be used for a variety of activities. The nearest school is 5km away from the village so too far for the smallest children to walk there – we are trying to find a better solution for them. The aim is to provide them with 2 hours long tuition classes and to enrol them into a regular school.

We are also still working on solutions for the children that work/beg with their parents on the streets – many are from India or other parts of Nepal and tend to move around quite a lot. This makes enrolment into a regular school very difficult so it takes a long time to find solution for all. Where possible we are trying to get the parents enrolled into one of our training courses and help them with employment. Not all are interested in that but those that are will be starting the training soon.

I wanted to say a huge thank you for all the support, it really means so much. The results are incredible, we are seeing less and less children living permanently on the streets and more children attending school. Thank you!
