Revamping of our Literacy Program Wild Horse Tales

Dear Supporters,

In July of this year, Wild Horse Rescue Center’s literacy program, Wild Horse Tales, was handed over to our new director. This was very exciting for the future of Wild Horse Tales, as the program is currently being revamped.

Wild Horse Tales is a part of Wild Horse Rescue Center, and the program encourages children to read more and to learn about horses. The program provides a curriculum for first, fourth, and fifth grades and features four books by Walter Farley. The first grade books are Little Black, a Pony and Little Black Goes to the Circus. The fourth grade book is The Black Stallion, and the fifth grade book is The Black Stallion Returns. The students also get to meet the horse characters from the books, as Little Black, Big Red, and the Black Stallion all live at Wild Horse Rescue Center. A “Super Touch” event is offered, where we either bring the horses to a local barn or have the school to come out to our center. During this event, the children learn about what horses eat and how to care for them.

The Wild Horse Tales literacy program is currently being revamped by its new director, who is trying to find new channels and schools that are interested in this great program. If you want to learn more about the program, you can go to www.wildhorsetales.org.

In the month of October, Wild Horse Rescue Center has been attending Jack’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch in Clermont, FL, where they have been offering pony rides for the public. This has been a very successful event, and it has brought in funding that will be used for hay and feed for our horses. We have had riders of all ages riding our mustangs. Some adults have even ridden for the very first time.

Going forward, WHRC has more events planned to spread the word about mustangs, which will help us to raise funds for our center. We look forward to this time of year, since the weather will be somewhat cooler. We want to send a big thank you to all of our supporters who we meet at these events, and to everyone who supports us from far away.

Saving Wild Mustangs one donation at a time!

Dear Supporters,

Wild Horse Rescue Center works every day to improve the lives of all of the animals in our care. In the last three months, we have focused on relocating some of our horses. We brought in a veterinarian to provide some care for them, and we also hosted an open house.

The last three months at Wild Horse Rescue Center have been filled with a lot of rain. Due to flooded pastures, we decided to rent a pasture outside of our neighborhood. We brought twelve horses and a donkey there, and they were all thrilled to see grass. This also allowed us to let our pasture have a break, and we decided to spread grass seeds. The grass is now coming in, and it is amazing to see our pasture turn green.

In May, Wild Horse Rescue took in a young male donkey who we named Rambo. Rambo was unhandled when he came in. We set up an appointment with our veterinarian to have him gelded, and everything went well. Today, Rambo is a happy gelding and is being gentled. As soon as he is tame, we are hoping to find him a great home.

It is so important to have a great veterinarian whom you can trust for both wellness care and in emergency situations. In June, we had a horse, Euphoria, who was seriously injured, and we had to run her to our veterinarian at 10:00 PM on Father’s Day. We give vaccines to all of our animals and do Coggins on all of the horses and donkeys. With more than 50 horses, it is very expensive; therefore, we are grateful for all donations we receive toward veterinary care.

In July, we hosted a Summer Open House Fundraiser. During our Open House, we educated the visitors about the American Mustang and the care of horses. We showed how we train and rehabilitate the horses who come to Wild Horse Rescue Center. There were also raffles, a cake walk, kayak tours, and live music. The weather was great, the visitors and volunteers were happy, and we received great donations. We are so grateful for all of the visitors and donations!

New Hope for our Mustangs

Wild Horse Rescue Center is having a very successful start to 2018.

Our year started out with the adoption of the horse Apache, an older companion horse. Since then, WHRC has adopted out 13 other horses and one mammoth donkey. WHRC adopts worldwide, and we love to see our horses have a purpose.

Three of the horses, Rain, Starr, and Annie, who are all riding horses, were adopted by a family in Canada. The family came down to find the perfect mustang and they ended up falling in love with three of our mustangs.

Maria, an EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) therapist, came down in March and spent a week at our rescue center evaluating the perfect therapy horses for her therapy center, called the Mending Strides, in North Carolina. She found Ewya and Rango, who were already buddies, and, to our delight, she adopted both of them for her center.

In February of 2018, WHRC brought in two elderly horses, Sonny, who is 33 years old, and Chief, who is 25 years old. Their owner was an elderly woman named Marilyn, who had been a dedicated owner of both horses for 15 years. She felt responsible for their lifelong care, but she was no longer physically able to care for them herself. Therefore, she contacted WHRC to ask if these special horses could be rehomed at WHRC for the remainder of their lives. Both of these horses had been stalled, since hurricane Irma, due to damage of their pasture’s fencing. By being stalled, Sonny had foundered and had horrible abscesses in his front left hoof. Both Marilyn’s veterinarian and farrier misdiagnosed this and caused a great deal of additional pain and unnecessary procedures for Sonny.

WHRC accepted both Sonny and Chief at our rescue center, and they now reside in their own private double stall and turn out area, which was built just for them. Our veterinarian and farrier team have evaluated Sonny’s condition and tried several options, which are now working great. Sonny is no longer in pain, although, he will always be lame in that front left foot. Their former owner now comes to visit Sonny and Chief at WHRC, and it makes her very happy to see how both of them are thriving in their new home.
