The mental health situation among internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and host communities in the Kumba region of the South West Region of Cameroon remains critical, with many individuals experiencing heightened levels of anxiety, depression, and trauma due to protracted conflict. Recent assessments indicate that approximately 65% of IDPs report experiencing significant mental health challenges, an increase from 58% noted in the previous report. The implementation of targeted psychological support programs has seen a considerable response, with 1,200 individuals benefitting from counseling sessions since our last report. Community workshops on mental health awareness have reached over 3,500 people, fostering discussions around coping mechanisms and stigma reduction.
In collaboration with the support received from the GlobalGiving team, donations from benefactors, HUFAC-CAMEROON has made substantial progress in addressing these pressing mental health needs. Seventy-five mental health facilitators have been trained, resulting in a 40% increase in community-based support initiatives. Additionally, 250 youth and women are actively participating in peer support groups, which have proven effective in mitigating the impacts of trauma and enhancing community resilience. The partnership has enabled the distribution of mental health resources and educational materials, reaching more than 2,000 households. Continued support and funding are vital to sustain and expand these initiatives, ensuring that vulnerable populations receive the necessary mental health care they deserve.
