Dear HOPE Supporter,
After last year's successful burn repair camp with our partner Resurge International, we have been following up with the 28 patients treated, providing post surgical care. Given the great outcomes achieved during the camp and HOPE's community health worker's enthusiasm for learning new skills to provide burn care and educaiton to poor families, Resurge International has set the date for their next camp! HOPE Foundation will be hosting its second Burn Repair Camp from November 7- 21, 2014. We could not be more excited to have the assistance of Resurge's team to provide unparalleled care and surgery to impoverished patients in Cox's Bazar. We are furthermore looking forward to the fantastic learning opportunities for our staff and village health workers, who are at the forefront of spreading awareness and education on the prevention of burn.
In the time leading up to the camp, HOPE Foundation will be recruiting patients and screening them to determine their eligibility for surgery. This is an extensive job, that invovles HOPE staff to travel to remote areas and essentially knock door to door, to inquire whether anyone in the home or village has endured a burn injury. While this task is tedious, its a great opportunity for our staff to reach additional remote areas and spread the word on not just burn care but the services at HOPE Hospital available for those who cannot afford care otherwise. We can't wait to update you in the lead up to the camp.

Dear HOPE Supporter,
Since HOPE Foundation held its first-ever burn camp in the fall of 2013, we have seen an increase in patients coming to our hospital to receive care for their burns. Burn injuries are very common in south Asia where parental supervision is lacking, as well as where open cooking fires are common in most rural homes. Women and young girls who are tasked with the responsibility of cooking for the family are often wearing ill-fitting clothing that tends to catch in the fire. Burn injuries are disabling as the limb or area injured often loses its functionality without immediate proper care. HOPE has a high amount of patients in our catachment area who need corrective surery to restore functionability, as well as new cases that need to be treated right away. Thanks to our partner in burn care, Resurge International, and their training of our staff, HOPE Hospital is able to provide unparalleled care in burn, for the region. We continue to see burn patients on a continuous basis, and are ecstatic to see the ncreased awareness Resurge and our burn camp brought to Cox's Bazar.

Murshida Begum: Life Changing Surgery

Dear HOPE Supporter,
We find that telling some of our patient's stories to our dedicated donors truly helps them understand just what an impact their committments make in the lives of those in need. Please read Murshida's story to nderstand just what a difference you have made for this special litle girl.
From October 25-November 8, ReSurge International, a California-based organization that focuses on correcting burn injuries for those who need it most, visited HOPE Hospital. ReSurge brought a team of surgeons, doctors, nurses and support staff in order to host a burn repair camp for the community in which we serve. In total ReSurge International completed 28 surgeries. Our patients could not have been happier to receive these critical surgeries, such as Murshida.
Murshida Begum, just 5 years old and youngest of 7 children, is from Khunia Palong, Ramu, Cox’s Bazar. When Murshida was just one year old she was unattended to briefly and burned her hand in a pile of burning ash. This developed a contracture and physically bent her hand. Her parents only used medication to cure the ulceration but did not take her to a hospital for the contracture as they could not afford the cost of surgery. Murshida’s parents felt guilty as they could not afford her surgery and her friends would often mock the abnormal look of her hand. Thanks to Resurge International, Murshida received the surgery she desperately needed to restore mobility to her hand as well as normality of her appearance. No longer will her schoolmates mock her injury. Murshida and her parents are very happy with the results as her hand now looks beautiful.
