Hello,

My name is Sunita, I stay in Margao with my mother and elder sister’s family. I had a very difficult childhood as my father was a sickly man. I had to do all the house work as my mother worked in the fields. I always wanted to go to school but in my village, girls are not allowed to. They are suppose to stay at home, learn to cook, get water and do the washing. When I came to Goa, my mother and I could not afford to rent a room on our own so we decided to stay with my sister and her family. My mother works really hard to provide our share of the rent to my sister. I look after my sister’s children and also do the house work.

One day while I was playing with my sister’s children near Royal Hospital, I came across an El Shaddai fieldworker. She came towards us and talked about going to school. I was so excited thinking that I could now attend but at the same time I was anxious not knowing if my mother will let me go. The filed worked was so good that she met my mother and convinced her to send me to school. The fieldworker admitted me into non formal educational classes at Stepping Stones Day Care Shelter in Margao. I was happy to meet with so many children who had never been to school before. The Teacher told me that I needed to learn to read and write and only then can I be admitted into a regular school.

In the El Shaddai’s Shelter - Stepping Stones all the children are provided with food, clothes and our school requirements. The teachers are friendly and are always encouraging me to do well. I love coming here to the Shelter. There are many more children like me who would like to go to school. This Christmas season, would you give us a special Christmas gift that could help children like me?

Wish you all Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year 2017!

Sunita
